Why our increased device dependence should make cyber security a top priority

Almost a quarter of consumers (23 per cent) would prefer to be caught naked in public than be without their digital device, according to a new study highlighting how much people depend on their tech today.

Consumers’ daily lives have become so centred around their digital devices that 22 per cent of the respondents to Kaspersky Lab’s ‘Online or Lost: Our Constant Connection Dependency’ survey said that being connected is as important to them as having easy access to food, water and shelter.

More than two in five consumers (43 per cent) check their device as soon as they wake up in the morning, while 69 per cent always have their smartphone with them when leaving the house, even for a short amount of time.

Additionally, a fifth of respondents (19 per cent) said that they feel naked without their connected device.

A spokesman for Kaspersky Lab stressed that this level of dependence means that security should be more of a priority than ever.

“Connectivity has quickly become a staple of modern life and, for many, an absolute necessity,” they said.

“Our desire to be online at all times, and the things we are prepared to do to maintain that digital connection, highlights how important connected devices are to us.

"However, with connectivity extending into all aspects of our lives, security can’t be overlooked. Users need to ensure that, no matter the situation, their connection remains both stable and secure.”
