Parliamentary Digital Service

The Parliamentary Digital Service is responsible for the provision of ICT and Digital services to both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. This is an exciting time to join the Digital Service: recently we merged with colleagues from Parliament’s Web and Intranet Service to form the new Parliamentary Digital Service Headed by a new Director, Rob Greig, The Digital Service came into being in April 2015 and will develop and implement a Parliamentary Digital Strategy, to ensure that the UK Parliament is making the best use of digital technologies.

The Digital Service is already helping both Houses to innovate and adapt Parliamentary practice to a “digital first” approach. A recent initiative was moving the majority of House of Commons Select Committees from a paper-based environment to a paperless one through the use of tablet devices: both improving user experience and delivering savings.

In the last year we implemented a major ICT change strategy across both Houses enabling Members, their staff and staff of both Houses to access information from wherever they are using cloud technologies. This was important in preparing for the arrival of new Members after the 2015 General Election. Our staff are also vital in ensuring that Members have the ICT equipment and support which they need to contribute effectively to the democratic process. The Digital Service comprises approximately 250 staff who provide support functions; specialist applications; an ICT infrastructure; telecommunications services; and programme and project management expertise.

We are looking to build our digital capability and recruit talented, enthusiastic and passionate people, who will play a part in enhancing our democracy and to help Parliament to become a digital by default organisation.
