BAE Systems' Applied Intelligence division specialise in managing and exploiting data to reveal actionable intelligence. We use this capability to help government and commercial clients address risk, revenue or cost challenges.

We are actively delivering innovation from genuinely "Big Data", in all three dimensions of variety, velocity and volume. We have innovative and exciting projects in markets such as Health, Transport and Telco that will deliver major differences to the UK economy and wellbeing. We are therefore looking for genuine expertise and engaging problem solvers to help us achieve this.

Our Leeds office are looking for data engineers and data scientists with a strong track record working with exploratory data-centric solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
• Completing tasks in conjunction with team members, architects, and SMEs, including:
• Creation and implementation of technical solutions based on big data technology.
• Providing technical expertise to support delivery and junior colleagues.
• Providing feedback for other team members.
• Communication with other team members, internal staff, and external clients.
• Building relationships with internal stakeholders.

Required Skills and Experience:

As well as proficiency in a general purpose programming language such as Java or Python, the typical background and skills required for this role includes experience of at least one of:
• Big Data development, including a variety of:
- Technologies - Hadoop, MapReduce, HDFS
- Tooling - Pig, Hive, Impala, Spark, Flume, Kafka
- Distributions - Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR
• Data analysis and model building using best in class tools (e.g. R, NumPy, Matlab)
• Exploratory data analysis (e.g. Cluster Analysis, Multilinear PCA)
• Enterprise Integration Patterns and their implementation (e.g. Apache Camel)
• Data visualisation (e.g. D3.js, Shiny)
• Dashboard development and design (e.g. Tableau, QlikView)

Working in a research environment would be advantageous.
