Software Developer Apprenticeship Role Definition

About the programme
BAE Systems Applied Intelligence is looking for talented individuals to join our Software Developer Apprenticeship scheme in our UK Engineering Centre, based in Leeds. You will be working on exciting projects across our broad client-base, gaining exposure to software development, data analysis, systems testing and systems architecture. Working with and learning from our talented team, you will have the opportunity to obtain significant hands-on work experience, gaining technical training and qualifications along the way, whilst also being in paid employment. In addition, you will receive excellent personal mentoring and support. We are looking for self-starting, well-motivated individuals with the willingness to tackle challenging technical problems and develop new skills within cutting edge technology.

Your development
Of the 24 month scheme, during the first 12 months you will alternate between classroom based training and working on office-based projects. Training will cover an introduction to programming, various courses in Java and a number of overview modules covering development methodology, software testing and other related topics.  Following this period, the focus will be more project-based: working under supervision, on different projects and with a variety of Applied Intelligence's clients, you will:
  • Assist in the design, program coding, testing and resolution of incidents affecting customer systems, on a day-to-day or project basis. Some of these tasks may include using skills such as data and test analysis, as well as the creation of related reports, specifications and the development of presentation materials.
  • Carry out design and assessment studies and execute more detailed tasks, such as overcoming development obstacles to deliver programs on time and offering high quality standards through thorough unit testing of code
  • Become more involved with the implementation of software, which forms part of a properly engineered information or communications system;
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of incidents affecting customer systems and also carry out day-to-day maintenance tasks in application support;

Eventually, you will be able to develop complex program code, document intricate diagrams, drawings and solutions. Your communication and negotiation skills will have broadened, enabling you to converse more confidently and efficiently with team members, helping you to provide Applied Intelligence with logical and seamless code and project solutions. Above all, you will be able to deliver excellent levels of service to Applied Intelligence's internal and external clients.

Further to this, you will also learn the following:
  • Technical skills - competency and knowledge based
  • Communication skills
  • Leadership and people management skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Business Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) skills

In addition to valuable work experience, at the cutting edge of the industry, you will be trained in the latest technologies by a local training provider.  Whilst some of the learning is classroom based, you will need to make use of your own time to succeed with your studies. Promotion is based upon merit, hard work and success across both your studies and work. However, Applied Intelligence is committed to giving you the level of mentoring, supervision and guidance you require to succeed.

In addition, professional qualifications may also be achieved including ISEB/ISTQB in software testing, ITIL or other industry recognised programming development qualifications, such as Java Certification.
