Role Purpose

The role of the Engineering Director is to lead the Engineering function such that products and services are fit for purpose, safe, managed, controlled, governed and delivered to customers, partners and stakeholders to meet exacting contractual, technical, regulatory, legal and business requirements. The Engineering Director provides leadership and line management to a small team of expert technical staff who are responsible for developing and executing a strategy for the engineering function and are measured on business objectives. In addition this role provides Engineering leadership direction and governance to a very large team of over 2000 engineers working across 15 countries and 47 locations.

Common Role Accountabilities

Common role accountabilities include:

    Drive on-going engineering improvement, learning from good practice and experience across the engineering function - encourage continuous improvement in all areas; Maintain engineering policies, processes, methods and tools appropriate to the engineering function; Ensure appropriate and effective application of policy and process (e.g. design reviews); Contribute to the consolidated business technical product roadmap, supporting proposals from the business and promoting direct development and reuse of IP across the business; Promote good practice and knowledge sharing, learning from experience; Establish and monitor appropriate and effective measures of functional performance; Support AI and the corporate engineering council in fulfilment of its objectives; Develop and execute the business and technical strategy for the area; Ensure their area of the business delivers to agreed KPIs / business objectives; Build productive working relationships with other areas of the business in order to maximise the performance of the engineering function; Analyse the organisations technology needs, both internally and as a customer offering, identifying gaps and creating strategic alliances; Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies; Ensures compliance with regulatory, legal and professional standards.

Depending on the particular job being performed, seniority and experience the Engineering Director may typically have a range of these specific accountabilities.

Core engineering accountabilities
    Be accountable and responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Engineering Function; Responsible for the career development of engineers within the function through the Career Management hierarchy; Be an inspirational thought-leader in the respective Engineering domain and enthuse the community toward its aims and aspirations; Set the Engineering Function Terms of Reference and objectives and be responsible for their delivery; Ensure the Engineering Function is managed and developed in-line with the over-arching business objectives; Represent AI on the Corporate Engineering Council and Corporate Quality Council Cascade Council actions appropriately & report on divisional progress on any Engineering or Quality transformation; Ensure the Engineering Function works with customers to agree the level of safety that is required for each Product, seeking the highest reasonably practicable level of safety of those who might be unintentionally harmed by the Product; Ensure the Engineering Function works with customers and suppliers to achieve exchange of information on use and performance throughout the life of each Product; Ensure the Engineering Function seeks to learn from other parts of the Company, organisations and domains; Ensure that appropriate independent investigation of incidents and accidents is undertaken; Ensure that delivered or traded Products conform to their definition; Ensure appropriate alignment of the management systems for Product Security, Product Safety and Health & Safety; Establish, maintain & continuously improve the business's engineering management framework; Manages and ensures effective control of the business's engineering activities; Improves the business's Engineering effectiveness; Ensures that operational procedures and working practices are fit for purpose and current; Monitors industry innovations and competitive landscape and recommends strategies to obtain competitive advantage. Provides support, mentoring and assurance to projects that are classified up to High in Assurance terms for T9 and Very High for L1+.

Leadership Accountabilities
    Build a team of professionals with appropriate skills, attitudes and motivation; Provide leadership of the engineering community across the business, and drive an appropriate culture within this community; Ensure succession planning is carried out and appropriate mentoring and coaching performed to promote and encourage high-potential employees; Inspire, train and develop the careers of engineers; Provide mentoring and career guidance to the general Engineering Function as required.
