Salary dependent on experience
Collins Aerospace, a unit of United Technologies, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defence industry. Created in 2018 by bringing together UTC Aerospace Systems and Rockwell Collins, Collins Aerospace has the capabilities, comprehensive portfolio and expertise to solve customers' toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market.
The Atlantic Inertial Systems (AIS) business units' history in the development of inertial sensors and systems can be traced back over 100 years and continues to evolve and innovate. We design and manufacture products for control, navigation and guidance for surface and air applications in the global aerospace and defence markets. We also use the technology in innovative ways to service the ever growing needs of a huge range of commercial applications through our joint venture company Silicon Sensing Systems Ltd (SSSL), see links below for more information on the technology and markets for both AIS and SSSL. Our world leading products include the innovative MEMS based inertial sensors and IMUs and the digital terrain reference navigation system, TERPROM®.
We are looking for a highly motivated technologist to join our Technology Development Team and are open to discussions with candidates from all levels of experience
. We are developing a technology hub near Bristol, UK, so this role would ideally be located there but our primary site is in Plymouth, Devon UK, so that could also be considered. Elements of home working can be discussed but the role will require regular access to laboratory facilities and team face to face discussions and learning.
The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team tasked with the design of state of the art MEMS inertial sensors. The role will have a particular focus on MEMS gyro and accelerometer design, transducer design, fabrication, interfacing and physical characterisation.
Our well established MEMS inertial sensors have created a thriving business and we are continuing to define the state of the art. This team provide world class MEMS inertial sensors systems for Collins Aerospace for defence applications and Silicon Sensing Systems for commercial applications. We have various on-going new sensor development projects and novel re-use of existing technology, these challenges coupled with the development of precision electronics and processing, mean that we are expanding the team capabilities and numbers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical input and leadership across a portfolio of MEMS sensor projects. Working closely with other disciplines within the team and external research establishments, you will be responsible for delivering novel inertial sensor technology to improve the performance and robustness of future sensors. Levels of initial responsibility will be tuned depending on experience and aptitude.
As part of the team, your contribution will be valuable to the teams work:
- Delivery of sound technical designs and judgements in a portfolio of MEMS inertial sensors
- Appreciation and coordination of outsourcing of MEMS fabrication projects with external partners
- Technical project planning and management of the projects being undertaken
- Design optimisation and adaptation to improve existing technologies for further exploitation
- Understanding the MEMS fabrication, processing, packaging and characterisation and how they influence the ultimate inertial sensor performance
- Appreciation of interfacing MEMS with ASICs and discrete electronics, with the support of electronics experts
- Preparing technical reports, presentations, test procedures, process specifications and product documentation
- Become one of the companies key technical experts
- Ideally, a demonstrable track record of MEMS device design input and IC/MEMS packaging technologies
- Some experience working with MEMS or physical sensor devices and associated electronics and testing
- An understanding of robust engineering practices to ensure designs are ultimately capable of being manufactured in high volume whilst maintaining performance margin
- Any candidate would be expected to be keen to learn from experts and through an individual drive to understand and contribute to the success of the teams
work - Would ideally be interested in inertial sensors and excited by the deep technical challenges being at the leading edge brings
- The team is very multi-disciplinary so this the role requires a natural team worker with excellent communication
- The candidate will hold a good degree in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry perhaps to PhD level (but not mandatory) or have equivalent experience

In return, we offer a suite of benchmark benefits including membership of BUPA, Annual Leave Buy/Sell, Employee and Family Assistance Programme, employee discounts, and much more, all working within a culture based on positive assumptions in an exceptionally safe, clean and modern working environment.
Please note that potential candidates will be subject to Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and background checks and that project access restrictions may apply to some nationalities.
