Role summary

As Applied Intelligence's Health & Safety Advisor, known internally as SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Advisor, you will promote a positive SHE culture, driving continuous improvement and striving to meet the function's targets and objectives. You will be responsible for effectively implementing the safety management and environment management systems, both of which are certified to international standards, as well as supporting audit programmes and visits, and maintaining the SHE intranet page and other information sharing sites.

This opportunity is offered as a 15 month fixed term contract providing maternity cover, ideally between January 2022 - April 2023.

The role will be based from our Guildford Head Office site however may be predominantly home based with visits to the Guildford office on average once or twice per week once you're embedded into the role. The role requires some travel to other UK offices for site visits and meetings, on average once or twice per month.

What you'll be doing

The primary objective of this role is to support the Safety, Health and Environmental function to ensure that the key SHE objectives are delivered in a timely and effective manner. This will involve:

  • Independently review Display Screen Equipment (DSE) user self- assessments, identifying and implementing any controls / adjustments as agreed necessary before closing on the assessment tool
  • Undertaking workstation assessments as required at any of the UK offices / client site locations as necessary
  • Undertaking workplace risk assessments, identifying and ensuring the effective implementation of suitable control measures
  • Administer and maintain appropriate records for the AI contractor competency scheme to include reviewing contractor competency assessments and if appropriate coach contractors to assist them in achieving approved contractor status
  • Log accident data & maintain the accident database
  • Co-ordinating and maintaining of sites SHE noticeboards
  • Collate accurate statistical information regarding safety and environmental performance
  • Produce score cards, reports, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, meeting minutes as necessary
  • Manage the SHE E-Learning site. Inputting new starters, archiving leavers and where appropriate arranging DSE visits with staff, providing them with support and liaising with IS / Facilities to ensure they receive any equipment that may be required.
  • Manage the SHE employee training program, to include arranging courses, maintaining an accurate training matrix and identifying refresher training needs
  • Manage the SHE induction process and deliver training to new starters as required
  • Independently input monthly data reporting to the BAE Systems CR desktop
  • Maintain appropriate numbers and distribution of qualified first aiders and fire wardens throughout all offices.
  • Assisting with the SHE Assurance, Strategic Improvement and Five Year Review Programmes
  • Logging SHE assurance / inspection actions into Support Works (action tracking software) and ensure closure of such actions
  • Support as required the ISO14001, ISO45001 and ESOS certification process and objectives for the accredited site.
  • Undertake accident investigation as directed by the SHE Manager
  • Assist with the implementation and delivery of the BAE Safety Maturity Matrix (SMM) and SMM Lite Programmes.
  • Deputise for the Head of SHE in periods of absence and support other tasks as necessary to support the function


What we're looking for

Our ideal candidate will meet most or all of these requirements, however training can be provided.

  • Holds the NEBOSH General Certificate or industry equivalent
  • Holds, an IEMA or industry equivalent qualification or is working towards an appropriate environmental based qualification
  • Graduate level membership of an appropriate professional body such as IOSH/IEMA or equivalent
  • Experience working in a similar field / role
  • Holds or is work towards the NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Detailed working knowledge of ISO14001, ISO45001 and ESOS
  • Experience or awareness of International Safety Legislation ( e.g. OSHA) desirable
  • Suitably experienced/qualified Display Screen Equipment assessor
  • A high degree of computer literacy to include Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to present and provide training to large groups of people
  • Ability to work independently in a high pressured environment and deliver to tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal / organisational and communication skills
  • Able to work on his/her own initiative and as part of a team


Please note this role requires eligibility to gain UK Security Clearance.
