Role summary

The External Communications Manager, you will lead the development and execution of external communications plan for a market-leading provider of innovative solutions and services. A confident stakeholder manager, you will interface with both the leaders of the organisation and a range of key external audiences. This is a media-facing role therefore our ideal candidate will be a confident media handler, able to tailor and pitch stories that resonate with individual journalists. The role will also encompass strong elements of helping shape media materials, messaging and thought leadership content, acting as press office support to the team, working across the wider Comms & Marketing team to ensure a streamlined implementation and amplification of activities and working with the other communications elements in our business and Group Communications.

This opportunity is offered on a 1 year fixed term contract basis, based from one of our UK offices (Guildford, London or Great Baddow). The role may be predominantly home based with visits to offices on average once per week. Working outside of normal working hours may be required at times.

What you'll be doing

The following is a broad outline of responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing and drive the implementation of the external comms plan, driving media coverage, digital amplification and influencer engagement
  • Orchestrate relevant media briefings and identify and build relationships with key journalists
  • Support press interviews with nationals and broadcast, as required
  • Provide a briefing and coaching role to management and leadership for press interviews where appropriate
  • Proactively drive and generate positive news coverage linked to our strategy, by identifying opportunities, developing key messages and actively briefing the media
  • Lead in the development of thought leadership materials to complement strategic goals
  • Monitor UK and EMEA media and alert the team to any relevant coverage/opportunities
  • Act as main contact for media agencies, cuttings agencies and other core suppliers
  • Work with the Head of External Comms and agencies on measurement and evaluations
  • Responsibility for pulling together relevant materials for press interviews and events being leveraged by the press team
  • Review and input on materials that are destined for external consumption
  • Campaign development, management and reporting across UK and EMEA
  • Work directly with the wider marketing and communications team for campaign asset development and execution across multiple external comms channels and territories
  • Provide some of the interface into BAE Systems corporate media function, leveraging our profile in broader BAE Systems media activity


What we're looking for

The essential skills and experience for the role are:

  • PR agency or busy press office experience
  • Experience developing and managing campaigns with multi-channel execution; including traditional media and broadcast outlets, email marketing, social media, podcasts, blogs etc.
  • Ambitious, enthusiastic and motivated self-starter
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Capable of acting both independently and working with a team
  • Acute sense of what constitutes news and how to create impact in all forms of media
  • Adept at grasping complex issues and pulling out key themes
  • Strong writing skills - able to convey technical and detailed information effectively to a variety of audiences
  • Pro-active approach to engaging with the business and harnessing line support and involvement in delivering media relations plans
  • Ability to operate effectively and gain credibility in an intellectually demanding environment
  • Aptitude for remaining calm, even when handling a large number of competing demands on time and energy
  • Ability and willingness to be available and accessible including outside of normal working hours


Additional desirable skills include:

  • Experience of security and/or technology sector
  • Familiarity with working (agency or in-house) with organisations, such as consultancies or professional services firms, who are largely selling intangible services or services revolving around intellectual capital is advantageous
