Role Purpose

We are looking to recruit an account director for one of our accounts within the Central Government Client Group. The Central Government Client Group includes large central government departments, transport infrastructure organisations and key local government clients.

This is a key role within the Central Government Client Group, accountable for general management of the account P&L, leadership of the wider account and delivery teams and ownership of the senior customer and partner relationships. The main responsibilities include overseeing the winning and delivery of the current portfolio of projects and programmes worth ~£20M per annum against internal business targets and contracted milestones, and developing new business to continue the growth of the account.

The Account Director is also responsible for the overall pastoral care of the staff working on the account and for driving high levels of staff engagement to make it a successful and great place to work.

You will probably have a consultancy, delivery, development, integration or live services background with knowledge of data, digital or cyber and experience within the government or transport infrastructure sector. You will have previous experience of account management and of winning work within a complex and demanding stakeholder community.

What you will be doing

  • Developing and implementing a strategy, underpinned by an account plan, for profitable growth of the account in line with the Central Government targets.
  • Leading business development, sales and the development of appropriate strategic partnerships through senior stakeholder engagement within the account and partners, including negotiating the closure of orders or contract changes with support from our commercial team.
  • Management of the Account P&L including overhead and BD costs and ensuring overall profitability is in line with the budgeted levels, encompassing a range of commercial approaches and solution sets.
  • Line management of ~5 direct reports across account management, delivery and commercial, each managing teams comprising AI staff and subcontractors; and including responsibility for managing third party suppliers.
  • Staff engagement and pastoral care and engagement with the wider AI organization to enable team objectives to be met (e.g. D&I) as well enabling staff to meet their individual career aspirations.
  • Working within a matrix environment, collaboratively with the account and operations team, pre-sales, consultancy, engineering and project management, commercial and finance specialists to lead the development of value-adding proposals that address our clients' challenges.
  • Overseeing our delivery teams and leading both client and internal review boards for the purpose of managing our contract and subcontractor performance, ensuring client expectations are exceeded at both project and strategic levels, acting as the senior point of escalation.
  • Regular contact with senior stakeholders and key third party suppliers to gauge sentiment and satisfaction, taking proactive action to ensure that we are strategically aligned and able to realise opportunities and address issues and risks.
  • Engendering our 'one company' brand and view to the client; partnering with leaders and teams across the organisation to delight our clients and generate high levels of client satisfaction.
  • Ensure the day-day application of assurance is in line with prescribed policies and standards.
  • As a member of the Central Government leadership team, contribute to integrated business planning, business winning, organisational development and business improvement to deliver business success.


What we are looking for

  • Ability to identify and win orders both small and large within consulting, system integration, software development and service management.
  • Ability to shape strategic bids end-to-end; from win-theme planning, through to shaping solutions to enable pricing to win, and of pitching and negotiation the final deal.
  • Very high levels of written and verbal communication skills to write and present winning bids and address contract and account review boards.
  • High degree of resilience, able to tolerate uncertainty, ability to prioritise and help others prioritise without all the facts.
  • Leadership of a team of 80+ staff as well as subcontractor staff across multiple locations and from a range of disciplines to exceed client expectations.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring capability across a spectrum of grades.
  • Promote customer intimacy by supporting an inclusive culture that is open to change, innovation and growth.
  • Good organisational and team working skills to collaborate with colleagues across Applied Intelligence to combine and leverage best practice, industry trends and experience to achieve the best outcome for the customer.
  • Aptitude to utilise the entire suite of company solutions within our data, digital and cyber offerings.
  • Act as a senior member of the Sales and Business Development community to embed sales and business development skills across all of our staff on the account.
  • Ability to spend significant time on client site to manage team and engage stakeholders.
