BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, Defence & Space are committed to providing outstanding skills and building lasting relationships with our clients to help them achieve outstanding success on some of their biggest and most ambitious digital projects to date. As part of our long-term strategy, we are looking to hire a user researcher to help grow our User research (UR) function and engage in new challenges and discoveries across the sector.
You will have a strong understanding of best practices such as Government Digital Services (GDS) Service Manual; Human Computer Interface principles; ISO 9241-210: 2010 Ergonomics of human-system interaction and User Centred Design methodology. The User researcher role is a primary end-user advocate who produces interactive experiences that engage even the most discerning audiences.
As a research and data enthusiast you will plan, design and carry out research activities with users that help teams get a deep understanding of the people that use interactive systems. All levels of research inform proposition, service, content and interaction design by providing simple yet engaging thematic insights, that stakeholders and colleagues will be able to consume, analyse and build interactive experiences that champion users' needs.
What you will be doing
All roles in our Digital Experience community require a passion for creating digital experiences which delight and inspire diverse audiences. With 3-6 yrs. proven experience in user research, you will work with our Digital Experience principal consultants to become a core influencer and help define, establish and champion an evidence based, user-centred design approach across our Defence sector.
We employ UR consultants to capture, analyse and advise teams and clients on how to build digital experiences that are empathetic to user needs and drive measurable business results. They do that by carrying out the following key accountabilities / duties;

Working autonomously as a C02 User researcher, a self-starter, able to take ownership of UR work including the planning process

Work as a senior UR practitioner within a team (BAE Systems and/or client), occasionally taking on a lead role, own specific work areas and coach others when needed.

Lead the client engagement for specific areas of work concerning UR - maintaining and building client relationships; potentially collaborating with other research teams
-
Plan and facilitate effective workshops and translate outputs
Essential

Experience of advocating for user research and engaging sceptical colleagues and stakeholders
-
Expertise in identifying and using appropriate analysis and synthesis techniques, and presenting and sharing findings.

Experience of working with colleagues to plan and do continuous user research in a multidisciplinary team
-
Experience of running user research as part of a user-centred design process and will have delivered products and services in Agile environments.

The ability to understand problems to be solved and design and execute appropriate research activities to inform decision-making and facilitate action
-
The ability to include many kinds of users in appropriate research activities
-
Experience of helping teams adopt user-centred service design and delivery practices and embed them into their workflows.

A good understanding of the social and technological context for government services, and experience of aligning user research activities to help teams understand changing user behaviour.
Qualifications

Desirable but not essential: a degree in HCI /Cognitive Psychology/ Anthropology/ Sociology/ Computer Science or related field.

Willing to apply for / currently hold SC clearance.
