Job Details
BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is home to 4,800 digital, cyber and intelligence experts. We work collaboratively across 16 countries to collect, connect and understand complex data, so that governments, nation states, armed forces and commercial businesses can unlock digital advantage in the most demanding environments.
Launched in 2022, Digital Intelligence is part of BAE Systems, and has a rich heritage in helping to defend nations and businesses around the world from advanced threats.
We develop world-class RF and data systems and we are expanding our teams in areas including space systems and C5ISR with a common requirement for electronic engineering.
We need skilled, enthusiastic and motivated people at all experience levels from early careers to seasoned professional to deliver these exciting new capabilities.
We currently have a vacancy for a CNC Turner/Fitter at our site in Great Baddow, Chelmsford.
As a CNC Turner & Fitter you will be instrumental in assisting with the realisation of innovative designs, as products move from design through to demonstrators and onto production. You will be working with a broad range of internal stakeholders, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineering and research staff, as well as teams from other BAE Systems development and production facilities.
This role will provide you with the opportunity for involvement in truly interesting work, within a highly collaborative, supportive and dynamic environment.
Your main responsibilities as a CNC Turner/Fitter will involve:
Machining: Programming, setting and running CNC and manual lathes and milling machines.
Manufacturing small batch / prototype and production components ranging from highly accurate aerospace components through to lab use demonstrator items within time and budget
Fitting: Tasks can be very variable but are mainly aligned to supporting research engineers with innovative solutions to design and manufacturing problems. An ability to interpret unspecified requirements, problem solve and to communicate and work closely with others is highly relevant.
Use of basic RP/AM equipment to assist with the above and also to enable models and demonstrators to be produced quickly and efficiently.
General: Ensuring that all manufacturing activities are undertaken in line with Applied Intelligence Labs processes and SHE requirements
Your skills and qualifications:
Completed a recognised apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, machining or tool-making is essential
Qualified to NVQ Level 3 Engineering (or equivalent) or higher
Extensive experience of CNC and manual turning, with additional technical competency in milling also required
Be able to programme, set and operate different machine tools
Fitting experience
Demonstrate Innovation and problem solving skills
Able to liaise with broad range of stakeholders
Ideally be able to give advice on Design for Manufacture issues
What we're looking for in you:
You will be confident candidate with excellent communication skills. You will have the ability to problem solve and bring new ideas to the table.

Hybrid Working allows for increased flexibility in when and where we work, helping us to balance our work and personal life more effectively, and enhance well-being.
Diversity and inclusion are integral to the success of BAE Systems Digital Intelligence. We are proud to have an organisational culture where employees with varying perspectives, skills, life experiences and backgrounds - the best and brightest minds - can work together to achieve excellence and realise individual and organisational potential.
