Summary of Role:

This role is accountable for the formulation and delivery of the employee relations framework within the UK business areas. This is a standalone role reporting into the Director, Human Resources and Cultural Transformation.

This role will provide consistent best practice and commercial advice and guidance to a team of HR colleagues managing employee relations cases, which are of differing levels of complexity. A stand-alone specialist providing independent and expert advice and guidance, leading on Trade Union relationships, collective bargaining and negotiations.

The role will be accountable for the education and training of the wider HR function and the people leaders on changes in employment legislation and assessing its impacts as well as the overarching employment law and practices.

Main Duties:
  • Confidently liaising resolutions within ACAS Conciliations, partnering with internal & external solicitors and risk management of Employment Tribunals.
  • Lead case reviews across business areas and as required to provide an independent viewpoint, challenge the direction of the case and apply a level of governance;
  • Review the existing governance framework, develop it to ensure that an appropriate level of governance is applied to employee relations and policy amendments;
  • Provide best practice and commercially focussed advice internally and, on occasion, with a level of risk assessment detailed.
  • Support the HR Advisor team with longer term or complex absence cases ensuring that all internal and external options have been considered and advising on appropriate direction;
  • Collaborate with HR Business Leads and functional HR colleagues to understand their needs and support the HR Advisor team to deliver the needs identified;
  • Ensure that documentation is thorough and readily available throughout ER cases;
  • Manage the collation of any documentation in relation to external proceedings and liaising with the HRSS Manager;
  • Providing reports on case reviews and specific cases on a cyclical and ad-hoc basis;
  • Work closely with the team of HR Advisors to support the regular updating and development of the organisations key employee relations policies;
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert within the HR function by attending team meetings and delivering training activities to ensure the wider function are aware of employment legislation, any changes and its impacts on the business areas;
  • Provide information on ER trends within the organisation and develop appropriate resolutions.
  • Develop and promote informal conflict resolution solutions to support the culture of the organisation.
  • Liaise with other Subject Matter Experts within the wider function to ensure that a common understanding is achieved across all areas;
  • Lead the annual Trade Union negotiations in relation to contractual benefits, including pay;
  • At times, support the HR Advisor team by leading on or supporting complex ER cases.
Candidate Requirements:

Essential:
  • Experience of applying Employee Relations principles with a commercial mind-set.
  • Experience of providing ER advice across a business;
  • Experience of collaborating with colleagues in order to achieve the best results;
  • Proven track record of managing complex ER cases;
  • Ability to spot opportunities for improvement and implement changes;
  • A thorough understanding of UK employment legislation;
  • Ability to work with stakeholders at all levels and ability to influence;
  • Experience of working in a stand-alone role supporting a business / business area;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Skilled at assessing risk;
  • Work experience in a similar role.
Desirable:
  • Experience of working in a matrix-type organisation;
  • A CIPD, degree or other relevant qualification;
  • Experience of managing or supporting people elements of TUPE transactions.
