Role Profile

The Business Architect plays a key role in defining the enterprise in terms of its governance structure, business processes, organisations (business units), and business information and management operations. They align strategic goals and objectives with decisions regarding products, and services; partners and suppliers; organisation; capabilities; and helps define the key business and IT initiatives (i.e. Business Architects help organisations achieve business objectives (effectiveness, efficiency, and agility), design and manage change portfolios / programmes, and communicate with and engage staff and other stakeholders.)

The primary focus is the business motivations, business operations and business analysis frameworks and related networks that link these aspects of the enterprise together.

The Business Architect works to develop an integrated view of the enterprise using a repeatable approach, cohesive framework, and available industry standard techniques, and integrates these into wider management frameworks such as operations management and programme management.

Core Business Architecture Competences:

  • Develop a business architecture strategy and approach based on a situational awareness of various business scenarios and motivations and stakeholder needs and assignment context
  • Apply a structured business architecture approach and method for capturing the key views of the enterprise (including a meta-model and views list and core building blocks [e.g. Capabilities, Organisations, Processes, Value Streams etc.]
  • Develop the appropriate infrastructure (repositories, catalogues, data stores etc.) and configuration standards to store and maintain the Business Architecture assets (e.g. building blocks, diagrams)
  • Capture / define the tactical and strategic enterprise goals that provide traceability through the organisation and are mapped to metrics (e.g. KPIs) that provide on-going governance (e.g. around business architecture goals, design principles and scope definition)
  • Define and describe the primary business functions and organisations of the enterprise and distinguish between customer-facing, supplier-related, business execution and business management functions
  • Define and describe the set of strategic, core and support processes and capabilities (e.g. value streams) that transcend functional and organisational boundaries; identify and describe external entities such as customers, suppliers, and external systems that interact with the business; and describe which people, resources and controls are involved in the processes
  • Define and describe the business information (i.e. building blocks) shared across the enterprise and the relationships between those entities
  • Capture the relationships among roles, capabilities and business units, the decomposition of those business units into sub-units, and the internal or external management of those units
  • Develop models to support, expand or elaborate core architecture views (e.g. process models)
  • Responsible for the design and control of large or complex Business Architectures.
  • Works with Clients to take immature / non-existent Business Architecture capabilities within their organisations, and deliver useful architectures and / or improved capabilities
  • Demonstrates strong experience / skills in related SDLC, and business change areas, able to effectively promote and integrate business architecture into large or complex transformation projects / programmes
  • Nurtures and guides the technical ability of lower grade Architects.
  • Responsible for providing input into the performance reviews of lower grade staff
  • Provides career guidance to lower grade staff
  • Run Business Architecture projects beginning-to-end in challenging environments by leveraging personal added value and experience to the client. Parachutes into a project experiencing significant challenges and works them through to the best possible solution
  • Works with client technical authorities or Enterprise architecture functions to ensure we have identified, articulated and measured the value we add for clients
  • Creates or adapts business architecture frameworks to structure own thinking, and that of others, to use in articulating core architecture concepts to colleagues/ clients
  • Understands the impact that Framework Agreements can have on the BAE Systems commercial model, and takes appropriate action when required to ensure that key sales messages for BAE Business Architecture services are accurately and authoritatively communicated within bids and pitches and to develop or qualify new opportunities Retains overall ownership of business architecture through delivery and transition into solution design, and / or depending on project, through to live operations and/or subsequent refinement, or modification
  • Responsible for specification, flow-down and acceptance of designs and requirements internal stakeholders and 3rd parties
  • Management of the Business Architect team, design baseline and scope changes
  • Shapes further the solution blueprint and/or design - for example through the tailored application of architecture frameworks (e.g. Bizbok,TOGAF and MODAF) and industry standard modelling languages (e.g. Archimate, DSM)
  • Responsible for managing business requirements and objectives (Motivations) set out in the brief or contract
  • Establishes policy and strategy for the selection of architecture approaches and tooling (if required) and configuration management of Business Architecture assets
  • Works with client technical authorities or architecture functions to ensure that they have a clear understanding of architecture and design proposals at an appropriate level, and that environmental and other standards/constraints within the client domain have been dealt with appropriately

Core Business Consulting Competences:

The Business Architecture role is aligned to our Management Consulting capability and at times the role is called upon to undertake more general Business Consulting engagements in alignment with the following core competencies:

  • Lead and plan multiple business consulting engagements with different clients and different client types.
  • Plan, define and manage the delivery of complicated engagements.
  • Be familiar with key business consulting approaches and tools and techniques to be able to run workshops with minimal preparation.
  • Appoint and develop the staff to lead business consulting assignments.
  • Run business consulting exercises up to Board level with clients to elicit and develop the right outcomes.
  • Be able to direct business consulting projects through appropriate and efficient interaction with senior clients and project staff
  • Applies project management practices to complex business change projects, in particular being able to calculate and manage risks and dependencies as they apply to the uncertainties that can be a feature of complex change projects

Only those with the permanent and unrestricted right to live and work in the UK will be considered for a position within BAE Systems Digital Intelligence.
