The purpose of the Project Management (Early Careers) role is to provide ambitious, intelligent and hard-working Early Careers individuals with skills, knowledge and experience in project and service delivery management to enable them to progress into a successful career in Project Management.

A Project Management (Early Careers) individual will be involved in a wide variety of Project / Service delivery teams, working alongside talented and experienced Project Management professionals; and shall learn day-to-day Project / Service delivery skills required to solve complex business / technical challenges for our external clients and/or internal customers. Most importantly, alongside their team, they shall learn to take accountability of the successful delivery of Projects and Services by ensuring that high quality planning, control and assurance practices are followed on all aspects of project delivery, including mobilising consulting and engineering resources at various stages of the project lifecycle. Project Management (Early Careers) individuals will typically undertake a series of assignments of approximate 6 months duration that will provide a range of appropriate skill and experience and give exposure to other business roles in a project environment. Project Management (Early Careers) individuals will learn the tools, techniques and approaches used by Project and Service Delivery Management professionals and apply them in a controlled environment to ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget. In addition to delivering on project work, graduates are expected to contribute and support activities within Project Management and wider Early Careers, and while doing so build strong professional networks. This role will also include developing understanding of BAE Systems Applied Intelligence core values, organisational structure and working practices.

The specific responsibilities that relate to this role include:

  • Play an active role in mobilising the team and supporting senior project professional in managing suppliers, contractors and associates.
  • Define, document and execute small projects or work-package e.g. less than three months, with a small team, small budget, no interdependency with other projects, and no strategic impact.
  • Supports and contributes in all project phases, gaining experience of managing projects and reporting to Project Professional or Senior Project Professional.
  • Identify risks and propose mitigations and fall-back options.
  • Contributes to preparing realistic project and quality plans and support activities to track against the plans, providing regular and accurate reports to senior project managers and stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Proactively monitors costs, timescales and resources used, evaluates risks of change, bring it to senior project professionals attention to take action where these deviate from agreed budget or agreed task contingency within their work-stream or project area.
  • Provide support to senior project professional to ensure that own projects are formally closed and where appropriate, subsequently reviewed and that lessons learned are recorded.
  • Support Senior Project Professional to identify business winning opportunities for new or extended work, within or related to the scope of the project, programme or portfolio.
