Tech Academy - Engineering, Testing and Cyber Security Apprenticeships

Our growing Technology team plays a key role in ensuring OS is at the cutting edge of geospatial capability and is looking for people to join them. Its mission is to work across the business to provide customer centric design and technology services.

Join us in our Tech Academy roles and you'll have an opportunity to make an impact. To empower projects that deliver real-world benefits across Britain and internationally. To hear our customers say they couldn't have done it without us. And to be central to OS's vision: to be recognised as world leaders in geospatial services; creating location insight for positive impact.

Here are some of the types of roles we are looking for

Software Engineering

You'll learn skills in a core coding language so that you can develop, maintain, improve, and support our services, so that we can continue to deliver ongoing high level of availability for our internal and external customers at a high standard.

You'll write code using best practices to ensure it is clean, secure, up-to-date and testable with no performance bottlenecks. In time, you'll carry out code inspections and peer reviews to provide assurance of code quality against business requirements.

Data Engineering

Like our Software Engineering roles, but with a focus on Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) of geospatial data through algorithms, pipelines, and processes.

Business Systems Engineering

Like our Software Engineering roles, but with a focus on learning to develop, maintain, improve, and support our Microsoft Dynamics 365 Financial Supply Chain Management (FSCM) systems. As part of the role there will be the opportunity to support and configure the system, but also to enhance and optimise it to meet the needs of our stakeholders.

Software Testing

Do you have a passion for quality, an eye for detail, or an analytical mind that often spots the unexpected? Do you like to automate tasks that you perform on a regular basis? Do you compare outputs to specifications, like to check things work as they should, or enjoy exploring the breaking points of games, systems, processes, or technology? If so, we want you to be the next generation of Test Engineers at Ordnance Survey. We are looking for individuals with a real passion in quality control, who want to learn how to analyse systems, engineer automated tests and help shape the future of our technology.

Cyber Security

You will help defend our digital services from cyber-attack, respond to incidents and work with all OS teams to mitigate our security vulnerabilities. You will help ensure we comply with our policies, provide your colleagues with advice and guidance, and support our critical cyber platforms.

Here's a snapshot of technologies you could be working with

Python, C#, Java, React, JavaScript, Scala, Microsoft Azure Cloud Services, Microsoft Azure DevOps, Selenium, Cucumber, Pycharm, Specflow, JMeter, ESRI 'Arc' tools, Databricks, TensorFlow, Terraform, FME, SQL, GitFlow, Open Source Technologies, Microsoft Dynamics, Snyk, Tenable.

What the Tech Academy programme involves

Joining a dedicated professional Engineering team, you will embark on a 12-month training programme as part of an agile development team; working closely with a technical mentor, who will help you to develop the business and technological knowledge and skills required to flourish within the business.

You can read about how some of our previous trainees reflect on their experience here.

What you'll get from the programme

By the end of the training programme, you should be able to demonstrate good knowledge of:

  • Agile software development
  • Software testing analysis tools & techniques
  • Azure cloud hosting & DevOps
  • A programming language

Upon successful completion of the training programme you will be promoted to an Associate position, with a career path and development plan to progress you swiftly to your next role.

We expect that you will be enrolled onto an apprenticeship scheme to support your training. If an apprenticeship scheme is used, you will be awarded a relevant qualification on completion. Apprenticeships often have minimum level requirements, and we will work with you to identify appropriate learning to support your eligibility.

What we're looking for

Applicants are not expected to have all the technical and business skills needed to start; we understand that knowledge is grown over time. Thus, we're looking for a candidate that shares our values, strives for innovation and is driven by technology.

Please include a cover letter in your application and do mention if an apprenticeship is of interest. We receive a large volume of applicants for the tech academy programme, so any evidence that you already have will support your application. Examples to incorporate include:

  • IT experience using tools, technologies, methodologies, or best practice for developing, testing, or supporting systems or software.
  • Experience in a quality control, data analysis or cyber security environment.
  • Academic knowledge in IT practices
  • Drive and determination to rapidly learn complex skills independently.
  • Collaborating and working in teams
