Why this job matters
To ensure that BT has a coherent, best practice security story around modern software engineering.
This role follows hybrid working, can be full time or part time, & can be based in any of the following locations: Ipswich, London, Bristol, Bletchley, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham
What Your Job will Look Like
Each security story owner creates, communicates, and accelerates one of our critical security stories - issues which are complex, long-running, critical, but ultimately fixable.
When you begin this role you will own the security story for modern software engineering in BT, a space with many emergent and sometimes contradictory best practices. You are likely to start with targeted issues as you develop the influence in role to take on the systemic group-wide changes you identify. You will work with the rest of the team on shared topics, supporting on common problems and sharing best practices.
Importantly, you will be able to identify gaps and work with the business to get them filled without becoming personally responsible for their delivery. This is not a programme or project management role, and your view needs to stay strategic. Likewise, you will not be a technical expert in any one field. Your skill will be in understanding the views of the experts and bringing them together to inform the wider plans.
None of this is easy. 'Good' means being optimistic, resilient, and inspirational. You will need to create and nurture a vision that spans BT Group when everyone making the changes answers to someone other than you. You will need to build credibility with subject matter experts and senior leaders without any hierarchical position to give you authority. You will need to determine for yourself what the problems are, and drive for resolution wherever that response sits, and whatever their formal priorities are. In doing so, you'll be making a fundamental difference to security in BT, for colleagues, customers and partners.
What Skills We're Looking For
Ideally, you will have a familiarity both with software engineering best practice and the services and environments into which software is deployed. More importantly, you will have a good track record in identifying and instigating fundamental business change in any domain, regardless of your technology background.
You will be able to use multiple approaches to enable collaboration, and to communicate the resulting strategy to people in ways that fit their world views. You will be comfortable working across the full spectrum of communication, from inspiring images to robust multi-million-pound business cases.
You will be familiar with driving change at pace, continually asking 'why?' and 'how?' and using the answers to take us forwards. You will be working with every level of the company from team members to Exco, matching your story to your audience and building up long-term relationships with key influencers in all areas.
You'll know you're on track when people start repeating the vision back to you, when you see change happening, and when you hear about it from other parts of the company as something they believe we've always done. You'll know you've succeeded when we're the world's most trusted connector of people, devices, and machines.
Benefits
At BT, we entertain, educate, and empower millions of people every single day. We're a brand built on connecting people - whether that's friends, family, businesses, or communities. Working here, you'll receive an attractive salary and a range of competitive benefits, but - more than that - you'll be joining an ambitious organisation with a culture of togetherness, collaboration, and inclusivity, that takes a genuine and proactive interest in your progress and development.
BT is part of BT Group, along with EE, Openreach, and Plusnet.

We all stick to the same values: Personal, Simple, and Brilliant. From day one, you'll get stuck in to tough challenges, pitch in with ideas, make things happen. But you won't be alone: we'll be there with help and support, learning and development.
This is your chance to make a real difference to the world: to be part of the digital transformation of countless lives and businesses. Grab it.
A FEW POINTS TO NOTE:
Although these roles are listed as full-time, if you're a job share partnership, work reduced hours, or any other way of working flexibly, please still get in touch.
DON'T MEET EVERY SINGLE REQUIREMENT?
Studies have shown that women and people who are disabled, LGBTQ+, neurodiverse or from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification and criteria. We're committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace where everyone can be their best, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every requirement on the Job Description, please apply anyway - you may just be the right candidate for this or other roles in our wider team.
