Job description

The opportunity

The Senior Cyber Security Analyst will contribute to the operation, development, and improvement of the IT Security standards, procedures and policies which comprise the University Information Security Management Systems and IT Security Policy Framework.

To operate, maintain and assess security enforcing systems across the University IT Services environment. This includes Security related service management processes and related cybersecurity incident management functions (prevention, detection, response).

The post holder will provide specialist expertise on information and cyber security in order to defend the University's digital services from cyber-attack. Reporting to the Head of Service Cyber Security, you will primarily be working alongside technical colleagues in the Digital & Technology group, and you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational and technical management of information and cyber security issues within the University. The role requires working with third-party vendors that supply services to UAL.

The role also liaises with the other departments within UAL, like Information Governance and Comms to promote adherence to policies and appropriate behaviour in the use of IT. The post holder will maintain awareness of developing technologies, evaluate the impact on existing systems architecture, and further develop their knowledge and professional practice.

About you

Duties and Responsibilities

Technology
  • Responsible for the overall day-to-day technical and operational management of cyber and information security, supervising junior colleagues and creating virtual teams where required.
  • To analyse and assess the current threat landscape, advise where risks may apply to the enterprise UAL systems environment, and advise on threat mitigation.
  • To review and monitor configuration baselines for UAL University IT Services infrastructure and systems and contribute to their continuous improvement.
  • Know SIEM solutions and provide support in log analysis,.
  • Provide support for the ongoing enhancement and delivery of SOC
  • Review security standards, policies, and best practices for the university.
  • Manage and coordinate the response to Cyber Security incidents and investigations, managing them professionally, including computer forensics for evidence gathering and preservation to align with Cyber Security standards of professional ethics.
  • Lead and supervise the cyber security team, ensuring proper IT system and data security is practised at all times. Triage cyber events, incident response, network analysis, threat detection, trend analysis, vulnerability, and exploits information and resolve advanced vector attacks such as botnets and advanced persistent malware.
  • Cyber requirements analysis, strategic support to operations, and malware analysis.
  • Provide daily and weekly metrics for security and vulnerability incidents. Provide tuning recommendations of policy in security control tools to leadership and tools administrators based on findings during investigations or threat information reviews.
  • Support the development and maintenance of UAL information security policy, process and procedure.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams in Digital and Technology on monitoring intrusion detection tools and procedures to prevent intrusions, hacking, and any other unauthorised or malicious activity.
  • Report to the manager regarding the effectiveness of current cyber security measures.
  • Oversee the management of patching, vulnerability analysis and penetration testing of University IT systems, including assisting with the development and maturity of the programme, thus ensuring threats to the University's systems and data are identified, remediated, or mitigated.
  • Design, implement, and support technical security controls to defend University IT systems (both internally and cloud-hosted) against security threats and to address specific security challenges across the University.
  • Assess security infrastructure, network, and systems design to evaluate and identify security risks, threats and vulnerabilities of networks, systems, applications, and new technology initiatives and ensure overall system/network security. Conduct assessments of existing and new software deployments whilst continuously looking at ways to mature our processes and improve the services.
  • Develop the knowledge and capability across the University (including other solutions teams) to identify and consider cyber security and information management issues within projects and research, education, and operational business-as-usual activities.
  • Work with internal teams, departments and colleges throughout the University, and 3rd parties, to ensure Digital & Technology solutions match agreed security architectures.
  • Assess cloud-hosted solutions, ensuring that any UAL integrations are secure, and advise on security best practices when choosing cloud providers.
